Where the numbers in QuizBold come from, what each source contributes, and how to reach us.

1. Where the data comes from

QuizBold is built on publicly available football facts. We collect them from several sources and cross-check them against each other, so that one source being wrong does not turn into a wrong answer on the board.

Match data for the recent seasons comes from the official tournament feeds. Everything older is assembled from the archives listed below, and where two sources disagree we record both and settle it on the events of the match itself.

The game uses no licensed analytics data. Expected goals, shot maps and player ratings appear in no board, no statistic and no list.

2. The sources

Each source below supplies something you can meet in the game. The names are spelled the way the sources spell them.

  • Superstats.dk

    What we use it for
    The Danish Superliga from 1991 to 1999: line-ups and goals.

    Publicly reachable pages. The source publishes no terms of reuse.

  • Transfermarkt

    What we use it for
    Line-ups, player statistics and league tables from before 2001.

  • RSSSF

    What we use it for
    English league tables and champions from before 1992.

  • Wikipedia / Wikidata

    What we use it for
    Championships, player names and dates of birth.
    Terms
    Wikipedia text is CC BY-SA 4.0 and Wikidata is CC0 1.0. We use single facts only and copy no prose.

  • football-data.co.uk

    What we use it for
    Referees, attendances and cross-checks of results.
    Terms
    Freely available data sets. The source asks for no credit, and we name it anyway.

  • OpenLigaDB

    What we use it for
    Cross-checks of goals in the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga, plus selected seasons of other competitions, among them the World Cup, the Euros, the Champions League and the Premier League.

    ODbL 1.0. The database is community-maintained and published under the Open Database License.

  • footballsquads via footballcsv

    What we use it for
    Squad lists, which help us recognise a player across clubs.
    Terms
    Read from the footballcsv project and its cached copy of footballsquads.co.uk, never from the site itself. The cache is labelled CC0 1.0, but that label does not bind the source: the terms of footballsquads.co.uk allow non-commercial use with credit and require express permission for commercial use.

  • ESPN

    What we use it for
    Line-ups in qualifying matches.

  • national-football-teams.com

    What we use it for
    Line-ups in international matches from 1930 to 2016.
    Terms
    Publicly reachable pages.

  • Soccerbase

    What we use it for
    The English divisions from 2001 to 2004.

  • NIFS

    What we use it for
    Cross-checks of goals in Nordic matches.

  • Mart Jürisoo / international_results

    What we use it for
    Cross-checks of results and scorers at the World Cup, the European Championship and in the Nations League.

  • BDFutbol

    What we use it for
    Scorers in Spanish, French, Italian and German matches.

    Publicly reachable pages.

3. Club crests

The club crests on the boards are taken from the file pages on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.

Where the licence behind a crest asks for a credit, the credit is here:

The other crests are the clubs' own marks, shown so that a club can be recognised. If you hold the rights to one and want it gone, we remove it, and the board shows the club's name instead.

4. When something is wrong

We keep a ledger of our corrections. Every time a fact is corrected we store the old value, the new one, which source it came from, and what settled the matter. That is why an error usually shows up in one place rather than across every game at once.

5. Rights holders

If you hold rights in one of the sources above, you can ask us to remove the material we hold from you. Tell us which pages or which material it concerns, so that we remove the right thing.
